Plan could thin California forests
LOGGING WOULD BE EASIER IN NATIONAL TIMBERLANDS

Critics cautioned that Bush's plan seeks to roll back environmental protections put in place after timber practices such as clear-cutting decimated the old-growth forests of the West. National forests cover about 20 million acres of California, and the president's proposal could eventually affect up to half that area.
