Bush probably wanted to make sure that if anything happened to him, someone would be left behind to take away the rest of our rights as citizens of the once-great democratic United States.

I was under the impression that the State of the Union Address, itself was a catastrophic event. The fact that Bush is still giving these addresses definitely is.

It is a frightening thought that Gonzales COULD have been in charge of this country.

This is a long-standing tradition. One member of the cabinet always stays away from the State of the Union address (in this case, that person is referred to as “The Winner”). A few years ago, it was Norm Mineta, Secy of Transportation, which meant that if there had been some otherwise tragic event, at least the President would have been a Democrat.
