Reports That Led to Terror Alert Were Years Old, Officials Say By DOUGLAS JEHL and DAVID JOHNSTON Published: August 3, 2004 - New York Times WASHINGTON -- Much of the information that led the authorities to raise the terror alert at several large financial institutions in the New York City and Washington areas was three or four years old, intelligence and law enforcement officials said on Monday. They reported that they had not yet found concrete evidence that a terrorist plot or preparatory surveillance operations were still under way…

Lisa,
On Monday you posed the question, "Which poll do you believe?" I just want you to know I don't believe any of them.
I took a post-graduate course in mass communication at the University of Oklahoma back in the '80s, and public opinion polling was a major part of the curriculum. I learned then that fewer than 50% of those asked to participate actually agree. Yesterday, on "Hollywood Squares" of all places, I learned that in the 21st Century, more than 60% of those asked to participate in the Gallup Poll refuse.
That leaves me with the conclusion that only the bored and socially challenged among us makes up the core of people whose "opinions" are related to the public.
I refused to believe in the '80s that fewer that 1,500 people could accurately reflect the opinion of the masses, and I believe it even less today, knowing what I know now. On the contrary, I am convinced that a significant number of Americans base their opinions on what they are told by opinion polls. The polls create opinion, rather than measure it.

I
shouldn't be on your site I suppose, as I hail from Sweden not from the US at
all...
Nevertheless I debate US conservatives on a Death Penalty board, being an anti
myself, and I find the US politics quite fascinating.
I read Ann Coulter today, and my eyebrows disappeared into my hairline (which
really is receding to my neck :D ).
I can hardly credit people taking her seriously - such utter and total mix of
bigotry, hate, religious zeal, childishness, lack of empathy and plain old BS.
I had to google her name to see what people are saying about her - and so
I stumbled on your site.
I had a good laugh and please keep it up.
Thanks for making my surf session ;D

Thanks for writing.
Swedes and all other people are welcome here at AHNC.
I think if Ann Coulter ate food she might have a better attitude. Hunger makes
some people mean.
Mission Accomplished: You enjoyed my site.

“I was watching all the pundits and all the critics today, and they said it was very smart of John Kerry to portray himself as an old soldier reporting for duty. They thought that was very clever. Of course, President Bush can do that. He can portray himself as an old soldier. Although in Bush's case, the reporting for duty thing might be new.” Jay Leno
