SUBJECT: Hartwell v Clark
Lisa,
I admire the passion with which people wrote to your site defending
General Wesley Clark's qualifications to be the Democratic nominee for
president. The fact that so many people wrote speaks volumes of the
popularity of All Hat No Cattle.
I also admire the military service of General Clark. He has paid his
dues to his nation as a military man.
However, I still don't believe he is a good candidate for president. I
don't feel comfortable with my party's nominee singing the praises of
the Bush Administration in any context and joining the party so
recently. These actions speak poorly of his credibility as a
Democratic presidential candidate.
Some readers pondered my own qualifications to write the column. I
have degrees in political science and public administration and will
soon receive a law degree. I have followed political campaigns
closely, both as an observer and as a paid consultant, for almost
twenty-five years. I have also written a book, Truth Matters, which
posits that the best way for a voter to determine whether a president
will be honest is to look closely at their campaign.
My take on Clark is that he has started his candidacy is at the wrong
time. He should work more on campaigning for other Democrats and
developing his positions on issues. I am still not clear as to whether
he supported the Iraq war, for example. Also, I think he would be an
excellent choice for Secretary of Defense. Perhaps years from now, I
will reconsider my analysis of Clark as a Democratic presidential
candidate.
Everyone is welcome to visit my site at
www.deanhartwell.com . I
promise not to ask anyone how long they have been a Democrat, or,
indeed, if they even are one!
Sincerely,
Dean
