Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House
speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like at
Chappaquiddick in 1969 when Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy was involved.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the
water, and then have a press conference the next day," the
embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published
Wednesday.
"Speaking of Foley, let's see what's happening on Brokeback, I mean Capitol Hill. God, it shows you how times have changed. It used to be a good thing when two congressmen were on the same page. Now, it's horrible." --Jay Leno

Emails
Subject: Social Security Food For Thought
hi Lisa,
I've gotten that Social Security stuff in an email before, and had checked it
out on Snopes.com, thought you might want to check it out too. As you might
suspect, it's not quite right.
snopes social security
There's enough for these bastards to talk about without their lying.
You're way cool! lol
Slugger
Thanks Slugger! And thanks to the many viewers who
wrote pointing me to Snopes.com
In fact, my response to yesterday's email evoked many responses.
See below for a few.
I read Mike's story about social Security, lets put the Record straight,
1. The Democrats are responsible for Social Security.
2 the Democrats are also responsible for Medicare In 1966
Bob Dole and his Group voted against it
3 the Democrats are also Responsible for all Company Benefits that people
Received today.and Company Medical Benefits.
4.the Democrats are also Responsible for the G.I.benefits that people received
and all Military Benefits Received.
5.the Democrats are also responsible for Welfare Benefits whom every republican
in the Country has been Raising hell about but only took up 5% of the Budget
while Corporate handouts are at 21% and you will not hear a peep out of anyone.
6. everything I live on today all my benefits came from the Democrats
7. take all the Benefits away from the old people Medicare and Social security
and see where this country would be your Parents would be living with you and
you would have to pay all of their Medical Benefits as well as their food. and
as we all know the Republicans do not believe in social Programs at all. I
suggest don't let Rush Limbaugh do your thinking for you.
8..now what have the republicans done for Middle Americans gave them a 400
Dollar check back then turned around with high Gas Prices and took back over
2000 Dollars a year and got into a war that will cost our Kids and Grandkids
Billions of Dollars, I see no comparison In the Two Party System.
9. now I don't want to hear about the Democrats and Taxes out of all the
Civilized Nations that tax people we are away down on the list.
10.as a people we are guilty of keeping minimum Wages down look at Germany
almost 12 Dollars an hour, we are a rich nation and we should be able to do
better, try living on 515 an hour with no medical Insurance. and just look at all
of the Small towns all of their little factories has went overseas.
------
On your 10/11 page. You say:
I could dispute many of your points above but instead, I'll say this -- the way
to change the politics of this country is from within. And I don't believe all
politicians are corrupt, if I did I would renounce my citizenship.
You really shouldn't allow this obvious hit job to go unanswered.
Or, you shouldn't have posted it in the first place. A very quick visit to
snopes.com ( http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/sschanges.asp ) refutes almost
every point on that list. How many people are going to read and believe that
hogwash and not bother to check it out at all. It is just such an obvious
anti-Democrat rant, I can't believe you just let it pass with that rather weak
response, above.
Jim
I don't get much right wing mail. I wanted to post that email to show how the rightwing doesn't think Social Security has a right to exist.
I preferred to ignore Mike's waving of paper tigers and address the issue of social security and it's implications.
Thanks for the Snopes link, too. That email didn't go unchallenged btw.
